Statement:
In my body of work, I am playing with the energies of the collage pieces in relation to each other and the texture-based painting. The pieces are chosen based on their texture, colour, light and individual energy.
The process of working with the pieces reveals much about them: some are dominant, loud and strong, some are subdued and unenergetic, others when alone may even go unnoticed. What I try to do is to reach a ‘sense’ of balance between the characters of these pieces, the texture that I have created on the canvas and the colors that I use.
My process of juxtaposition and placement of the pieces on the textural background involves constant negotiation. The affect is that the various energies and identities change in dynamic and often surprising ways. The understated pieces, depending on where they are situated on the canvas become highlighted and energetic, while previously dominant shapes become unidentifiable in relation to the others. I don’t start with a plan, a set of ideas or a color palette (except for the Blacks & Whites). I let the process guide me.
In the end there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ space. There is no logic in my struggle to reach a sense of balance between paint, texture and the various pieces. It’s all about what feels right to the eye in the moment.
